Can This AI Help in Diagnosing Colon Cancer Polyps? title banner

According to the statistics colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in the US with an average of 49 fresh new cases being reported everyday. Kentucky tops the tally with over 2,700 colorectal cases being diagnosed every year.

Colorectal cancer commonly known as colon cancer is impacting both the young and the older generation. The biggest problem with the early diagnosis is that this cancer in the initially stages is asymptomatic making it even more difficult for both the individuals and the medical professionals to diagnose it.

Colon cancer is a cancer related to colon or rectum which is located in the digestive tract of an individual’s body. The cancer starts with the growth along the inner edges of the rectum. These growth tissues are known as polyps.

Major reason behind colon cancer by far remains an unhealthy diet. The GI genius colonoscopy or lower endoscopy  can be used in early diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Using the GI genius colonoscopy

The  inner part of the colon is closely observed for polyps and further it digs a little deeper to look into the growth of the polyps if the growth of the polyp is abnormal, it is further investigated with other symptoms such as constipation, weight loss, anaemia, pain the bowels, gastric problems.

The recent developments in the GI genius has enabled the doctors to identify whether the polyp is cancerous or non cancerous only by observing them. The GI genius module works on a set algorithm by feeding its database with videos of cancerous and non-cancerous polyps.

The developers of the Medtronic system (also known as the gi genius) have enabled the doctors to detect colon cancer in the early stages further making it possible to save the lives that colon cancer is taking every year in the US.

(Must check: Deep Learning Algorithms)

GI genius's algorithm recognizes cancerous and non-cancerous polyps by simply looking at them. This is a miracle for the medical professionals who were using colonoscopies to detect cancer but the diagnosis has never been that easy.

This GI genius developed by Medtronic systems and Cosmo Pharmaceuticals works on a special algorithm which has been made by training the GI genius looking at the insides of colons to identify the cancerous and non-cancerous polyps. This innovation in the field of AI has been hailed by medical professionals of all countries.

According to Wired GI genius was first approved in Egypt in October 2019 ,now even the US has given a green signal to the GI genius in colonoscopy. (Source)

Time and again Artificial Intelligence is doing wonders for the medical practitioners especially in a time when colon cancer is rapidly spreading among the US looks like the medical science is back again with a new course of action.
