The Internet of Things (IoT) explains the intricacies of physical objects and that's why the term 'things' has been referred to. These are ingrained with softwares, sensors and other technologies for the sole purpose of exchanging data with other devices across the Internet.

It has transformed almost everything in day-to-day lives. From connected home hubs to each and every app-controlled device,  IoT radiates its significance in every spheres of life.

(Must Check: Understanding the Concept of the Internet of Things (IoT))

Samsung has declared that IoT platform SmartThings assists edge computing. Edge computing has changed the way the data is being generated, produced, handled and exchanged from one device to another.

Gartner elaborates the very term as a part of a distributed computing topology where the processed information is positioned close to the edge--"where things and people produce or consume that information."

Samsung has brought this transformation in order to focus on improving home automation. This is one of the newest ways for SmartThings Hubs that provides an opportunity to connect various devices via a local network and not through a cloud.

Since Edge computing allows the whole functionality to be generated through a local network, it means that the tasks will be accomplished faster than it used to be, and also at the same time, this process ensures greater security.

The SmartThings group noted that the users won't be able to observe a change within the app, but on the other hand, SmartThings Edge is focusing on connectivity, such that the experience is viewed in a spectacular manner. And an advanced technology not only enhances the "speed of automations for consumers by eliminating the need for cloud-based processing", but also brings back the information to the Hub.

SmartThings is different from other hubs including Zigbee, a standards-based wireless technology that emphasizes low-cost, wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) networks; Z-wave, also a wireless communications protocol that is also employed for home automation etc.

According to IoTnews, the previous generations of the SmartThings app needed a wired eternity connection,  whereas the new one needs a SmartThings Hub 2.0 or 3.0. This difference is blanketed by few other improvements.

Samsung introduced several improvements such as SmartThings Find which focuses on searching for galaxy devices and SmartThings Energy which traces, identifies, and manages the usage of energy of the company's home appliances.
