A Beginner’s Guide to AWS Outpost

AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that brings AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to the customer's location. AWS Outposts enables customers to build and run applications on-premises using the same programming interfaces as in AWS Regions while utilizing local compute and storage resources for lower latency and local data processing needs.

An Outpost is a collection of AWS compute and storage capacity that is deployed at a customer location. As part of an AWS Region, AWS operates, monitors, and manages this capacity. Subnets can be created on your Outpost and specified when creating AWS resources like EC2 instances, EBS volumes, ECS clusters, and RDS instances. Instances in Outpost subnets use private IP addresses to communicate with other instances in the AWS Region, all within the same VPC.

AWS Outposts is intended to work with a continuous and consistent connection between your Outpost and an AWS Region. You must connect your Outpost to your on-premises network in order to connect to the Region and the local workloads in your on-premises environment. Your on-premises network must provide WAN access back to the Region as well as to the internet. It must also provide LAN or WAN access to your on-premises workloads or applications' local network.

What is an Outpost?

AWS Outposts are on-premises devices that are managed by AWS. It connects a client's private physical and virtual infrastructure to cloud-based services, APIs, and managed infrastructure services.

Developers create and deploy applications with the same interface used in Amazon's public cloud regions, using local computing power and onboard storage. For applications that require low latency or must meet local data processing or residency requirements, this can support a hybrid cloud strategy.

Developers deploy resources locally using a subset of Amazon cloud services like Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Elastic Container Service (ECS), and Elastic Block Store (EBS). They can also create subnets in order to connect to an Amazon VPC hosted on Amazon's public cloud.

Object storage is available via a variant of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), but it lacks the redundancy levels of the standard version. It still uses the same S3 APIs, and an Outpost can distribute up to 96 TB of data across devices and servers. Data can be moved to and from a tethered AWS Region using AWS DataSync, and an administrator can create up to 100 buckets per Outpost.

As part of the AWS Service Ready Program, organizations can also integrate approved third-party providers. There are dozens of firms listed, including consulting partners and technology vendors such as Citrix, Datadog, and Trend Micro. An Outpost is dependent on consistent and indefinite network connectivity between the device and the nearest AWS Region. You must connect the Outpost to an existing on-premises network to maintain constant connectivity and a link to local workloads.
