Brain Gate technology is a branch of science that describes how computers and the human brain can interact. It is a system of brain implants. The implanted sensor monitors brain activity in the patient and converts the user's intention into computer commands or the subject's desired movement. 

 

The technology is intended to assist people or patients who have lost control of their limbs, those suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, or those paralysed by severe spinal-cord injuries. Cyberkinetics owns it, and it is currently in development and clinical trials.

What is Brain Gate Technology?

 

The BrainGate Neural Interface Device is a proprietary brain-computer interface composed of an internal neural signal sensor and external processors that convert neural signals into an output signal controlled by the user. 

 

This sensor contains a tiny chip the size of a baby aspirin and one hundred electrode sensors each thinner than a hair that detect electrical activity in brain cells. Brain gates are implanted brain technologies that were first introduced in 2003. It was created by Cyberkinetics, a biotech company, in collaboration with the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University in the United States. 

 

It is a brain-computer interface (BCI) for people who have lost limb control due to an accident, such as spinal cord injury or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). It is a brain-computer interface that allows paralysed people to live productive and independent lives by allowing them to control a computer with their thoughts.

 

In the event of organ damage or paralysis, the brain continues to function, generating signals and sending them to the appropriate terminals (organs).  Control signals, however, are unable to reach their destination due to paralysis or a damaged organ (s). A pedestal computer chip is implanted into the brain. It detects the user's intentions and generates commands accordingly.

 

In a brain gate system, the user's intentions are converted into electrical signals. These are further decoded with the help of a programme that generates control signals to perform tasks such as moving a robotic arm or a wheelchair.

 

A brain gate is a surgically implanted sensor that records the activity of dozens of brain cells at the same time. In addition, the system decodes these signals in real time in order to control a computer or other external devices. 

 

The brain gate technology platform was created to take advantage of the fact that many patients with motor impairment have an intact brain that can produce movement commands, allowing the brain gate system to create an output signal directly from the brain, bypassing the nerve-to-muscle route that cannot be used in paralysed people.

1. Chip :- A four-millimeter square silicon chip studded with about 100 hair-thin microelectrodes is embedded in the primary motor cortex, the brain region responsible for movement control.

 

2. Connector :- When a person thinks about moving the computer cursor, electrodes on the silicon chip implanted in the person's brain detect neural activity. His cortical neurons fire in a specific pattern, and the signal is transmitted via the pedestal plug attached to the skull.

 

3. The converter:- The signal is routed to an amplifier, where it is converted to optical data and bounced to a computer via fiber optic cable.

 

4. Computer :- The computer learns to associate patterns of brain activity with specific imagined movements up, down, left, and right, and to link those movements to a cursor.

 

When a person thinks about moving the computer cursor, electrodes on a silicon chip implanted in the person's brain detect neural activity from an array of neural impulses in the brain's motor cortex. Through connection wires, impulses are transferred from the chip to a pedestal protruding from the scalp. 

 

The pedestal removes unwanted signals or noise before transferring the signal to an amplifier. The signal is captured by the acquisition system and transmitted to a computer via a fiber optic cable. The signal is then translated into an action by the computer, causing the cursor to move.

 

The braingate system is a neuromotor prosthetic device made up of a hundred silicon microelectrodes, each one millimeter long and thinner than a human hair. The electrodes in the array are spaced less than half a millimeter apart and are attached to a 13cm ribbon cable that connects it to a computer.

The electrodes penetrate about 1mm into the surface of the brain, where they pick up electrical signals known as neural spiking, the language of the brain, from nearby neurons and transmit them to a titanium pedestal about an inch above the patient's scalp via thin gold wires. The pedestal is linked to computers, signal processors, and monitors via an external cable.

Advantages of Brain Gate Technology 

 

Some of the major advantages of brain gate technology are:- 

 

1. The Brain Gate technology operates with very little and simple training. One of the most amazing aspects of this system is that patients can communicate by thinking of what they want to say, which is then translated through text or a robotic voice and works nearly 100% of the time. 

 

2. Speech, eye movements, or noise have no effect on the user's ability to operate the device. As a result, it can be used in an interactive setting without requiring the person using the device to speak or have their actions influenced by noise around them. 

 

People who use the Brain Gate System are expected to use a personal computer as a gateway to a variety of self-directed activities. These activities may include the control of objects in the environment such as a telephone, a television, and lights, in addition to typical computer functions (e.g., communication).

This technology could be used to create robot warriors, which may sound a little obnoxious, but could actually make them safer on the battlefield when fighting people.

Disadvantages of Brain Gate Technology

 

Some of the disadvantages of the brain gate technology are :- 

 

1. As of now, Braingate technology requires that the device be physically implanted in the individual's brain. You could use the above electronic attractiveness without requiring a chip surgically implanted in the brain. Despite the fact that the chip is surprisingly small, brain surgery is always dangerous and can be risky.

 

2. At this time, Braingate technology does not support remote control, so a fitting connected to the highest point of the head is required. These brain-computer interface technologies have not yet been worn, causing the individual to be restricted in the zone of the gadget.

 

3. Brain gate technology connects people via email and messaging, or even a robot voice, by considering what the individual needs to say. However, this process is still in its early stages and will take some time. The individual must consider the decrypted content and voice each letter separately.

 

4. The people who have given the fact that it is very extravagant and advanced technology can save this company from leaching. Braingate technology is not yet available for purchase by business owners, but they estimate that the brain-computer interface technology will cost tens of thousands of dollars.

The scope of Brain Gate technology includes a second-generation interface software M*Power controller, which will allow users to perform a wide range of daily activities without the assistance of a technician. The system is buildable, wireless and smaller. This resolves the portability issue. 

 

Furthermore, the user will have better control over their respiratory system, limbs with muscle stimulation, or robotics. The goal of this development programme is for these people to be able to use their own arms and hands again one day.

The 'BrainGate' device can allow paralysed or motor-impaired patients to communicate by translating thought into direct computer control. Normal humans may also be able to use BrainGate technology to improve their interactions with the digital world if they are willing to receive the implant.
