What are Jovian Planets? title banner

Four enormous planets exist beyond our Solar System's "Frost Line" — the zone where volatiles like water, ammonia, and methane begin to freeze. Though the sizes, masses, and compositions of these planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune – vary, they all have key traits that set them apart from the terrestrial planets in the inner Solar System.

These worlds are officially known as gas (and/or ice) giants, but they are also known as "Jovian planets." The moniker is used interchangeably with phrases such as gas giant and giant planet to denote planets that are fundamentally "Jupiter-like."

While the Solar System has four such planets, extra-solar surveys have detected hundreds of Jovian planets so far. Let’s take a closer look at the world of the Jovian Planets in this blog.

Solar System and its Types

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and the probable Planet Nine are in the following order, starting closest to the sun and going outward: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and then the possible Planet Nine.

The solar system consists of the sun and everything in its orbit, including planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.

The Solar System stretches from the sun, known as Sol by the ancient Romans, through the asteroid belt to the four gas giants, and on to the disk-shaped Kuiper Belt and beyond to the teardrop-shaped heliopause. Scientists believe that the solar system's equator is around 9 billion miles (15 billion kilometers) from the sun.

As their surfaces are rocky, the inner four planets closest to the sun — Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars — are commonly referred to as "terrestrial planets." Pluto has a rocky, though frozen, surface but has never been classified as one of the four terrestrials.

Due to “ their huge size in comparison to the terrestrial planets, the four massive outer worlds — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — are frequently referred to as the Jovian or "Jupiter-like" planets. They're also largely formed of gasses like hydrogen, helium, and ammonia rather than stony surfaces, though some or all of them may have solid cores, according to astronomers.

Jupiter and Saturn are known as the gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune, which are further distant, are known as the ice giants. According to the Planetary Society, this is because Uranus and Neptune contain more atmospheric water and other ice-forming compounds, such as methane, hydrogen sulfide, and phosphene, that solidify into clouds under the planets' freezing environments.

What are Jovian Planets?

A Jovian planet is a gas giant named after Jupiter, which classifies the three other gas giants in the Solar System as Jupiter-like. Despite its name, a gas giant is not made entirely of gas.

It may have a metallic or rocky core, which is thought to be necessary for the formation of a Jovian planet, but the bulk of its planetary mass is made up of gasses such as hydrogen and helium, with traces of water, ammonia, methane, and other hydrogen compounds.

A Jovian Planet, unlike rocky planets like Earth and Mars, lacks distinct features between its surface and atmosphere. Because of the very high temperatures, its atmosphere gradually grows denser toward the core, even having liquid phases in between and at the core itself. As a result, such a planet cannot be "landed on" in the usual sense.

Our Solar System's gas giants include the outer planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, with the latter two planets commonly referred to separately as "ice giants" due to their high concentrations of ices, water, ammonia, and methane. These four planets have many satellites and rings in common, yet Uranus is unique in that it turns on its side due to an axial tilt of 97.77 degrees.

Jupiter, the biggest of the Outer Planets and the first to be spotted with a telescope - by Galileo Galilei in 1610 – inspired the word Jovian. Taking its name from the Roman monarch of the gods, Jupiter, or Jove, the term Jovian has come to imply anything related with Jupiter, and hence a Jupiter-like planet.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the four Jovian planets in the Solar System. A Jovian planet is thus a gas giant composed largely of hydrogen and helium gas with various degrees of heavier components. These planets each have their own ring systems in addition to massive systems of moons.

Another property that distinguishes gas giants from terrestrial planets is the absence of a surface. In all situations, scientists describe a gas giant's "surface" (for the sake of quantifying temperatures and air pressure) as the region where atmospheric pressure exceeds one bar (the pressure found on Earth at sea level).

Structure and Composition of Jovian Planets

In all cases, the gas giants of our Solar System are predominantly made of hydrogen and helium, with heavier elements accounting for the balance. These elements correlate to a structure with an exterior layer of molecular hydrogen and helium that surrounds a layer of liquid (or metallic) hydrogen or volatile elements, as well as a possible molten core with a stony composition.

Due to differences in structure and composition, the four gas giants are frequently distinguished, with Jupiter and Saturn categorized as "gas giants" and Uranus and Neptune as "ice giants." This is because Neptune and Uranus contain larger amounts of methane and heavier elements in their interiors, such as oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Unlike the terrestrial planets, the density of gas giants is somewhat higher than that of water (1 g/cm3). Saturn is the only exception, with a mean density that is lower than water (0.687 g/cm3). Temperature and pressure rise considerably as one gets closer to the core in all circumstances.

Jovian planets do not have a solid surface like terrestrial planets. Instead, as they reach the core, their constituent gasses get denser, eventually becoming liquid and finally a form of metal.

Scientists define the "surface" of jovian planets as the region where atmospheric pressure surpasses one bar for the purposes of quantifying and comparing planetary temperature, air pressure, and so on (i.e. the pressure at sea level on Earth).

As a result, the components of a jovian planetary surface will be those present in the atmospheric area when pressure exceeds one bar.

Jupiter and Saturn are thought to have a solid rocky core surrounded by a thick coating of metallic hydrogen, with another layer of molecular hydrogen on top. Uranus and Neptune's cores are similarly assumed to be made of rock and metal, mixed with water, methane, and ammonia, and coated in a layer of gaseous hydrogen.

Each of the Jovian planets has a number of traits. While Saturn's brilliant rings are the most obvious and well-known, fainter and darker rings surrounding Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune have also been observed.

The Jovian planets are also notable for having a large number of moons. Saturn and Jupiter each have over 60 moons, Uranus has over 20, and Neptune has over 10. The planets also feature strong winds and storms, as well as a fast rotation.

The hues of the Jovian planets vary owing to temperature, composition, and cloud height. The brown clouds of Jupiter, for example, are deeper in the planet's atmosphere than the white ammonia clouds. The pink-white methane ice clouds of Neptune are higher in the atmosphere than its blue gaseous atmosphere.

Surprisingly, it is the trace gasses in the Jovian atmospheres that give the planets' clouds their color, not hydrogen or helium. Uranus and Neptune, for example, appear blue-green because their higher atmospheres contain a trace of methane.

Difference Between Terrestrial and Jovian Planets

The following are the differences between Terrestrial and Jovian Planets :

  1. Definition

Terrestrial planets (also known as telluric or rocky planets) are planets composed mostly of metals or silicate rocks, such as the Earth's crust, asteroids, and rocky moons. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the four terrestrial planets in our solar system.

These are the nearest planets to the Sun. The terms "terrestrial planet" and "telluric planet" are derived from the Latin words terra and tellus, which mean "earth" respectively.

Jovian planets are large planets that are mostly made up of gasses or ice rather than solid stuff like rocks. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the four jovian planets in the solar system. There have been countless exoplanets identified circling other stars that might be formed of gas or ice.

  1. Surface

Terrestrial planets, because they are in the same category as Earth, should have the same surface. They will feature a metallic core and a variety of silicate minerals.

Jovian planets, on the other hand, are mostly made up of gasses like methane, hydrogen, ammonia, and helium. They're planets with molten rock at their cores.

  1. Composition

Terrestrial planets have hard and rough surfaces.

The jovian planets, on the other hand, have gaseous and void surfaces.

  1. Density

Terrestrial planets are rich in carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Terrestrial planets have a solid metallic core. Terrestrial planets are denser than Jovian planets.

Jovian planets are rich in ammonia, hydrogen, and helium. The cores of Jovian planets are less dense.

  1. Example

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are examples of Terrestrial Planets.

Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune are the planets classified as Jovian Planets.
