Tenure track Jobs

 

Most tenure track positions have three components: teaching, research, and service. The weighting of the three factors is determined by the type of institution. At a Research 1 institution, research may account for 60% of your job, with teaching accounting for 30% and service accounting for 10%.

 

At a regional public school, it may be split 50/50 for teaching and 25/25 for research and service. Because the percentages can vary, you must understand the expectations before you begin.

 

Tenure is attainable if you meet the expectations. However, some schools have a cap on the number of tenured positions in a department, and financial constraints may limit the number of people who can be given tenure.

 

If your university limits the number of tenure track positions to six, and there are six tenured faculty members and two recent hires ahead of you seeking tenure, it is best to keep yourself marketable.

Non-tenure track Jobs

 

The rules are a little different in a non-tenure track position. Many schools have no research requirements for faculty members who are not on a tenure track. They are primarily concerned with education and community service.

A non-tenure-track employee can conduct research, and while publications are appreciated, they will have little impact on annual evaluations. Non-tenure track positions are typically governed by a one- to three-year contract.
